Maintenance-focused release improves compatibility, streamlines packaging, and preserves the game’s development history.
Protoria Studios has released a new update for Optimum Link, focusing on long-term preservation, compatibility, and improved packaging for the experimental title. While the game itself has not received new gameplay content, the update modernizes its distribution and reinforces the studio’s commitment to ensuring its games remain accessible for years to come.
The maintenance update includes a variety of quality-of-life improvements, such as refreshed documentation, updated credits, improved packaging, and the removal of unnecessary files. A new compatibility launcher has also been introduced to address a launch issue that can affect some systems with newer Intel processors, providing a more reliable experience for players on modern hardware.
As part of the update, Protoria Studios has also included three historical versions of Optimum Link—Versions 0.1.1, 0.2.1, and 0.3 “Hummingbird”—available as launch options at no additional cost. Each version maintains separate save data to minimize conflicts, allowing players to explore the game’s evolution throughout its experimental development.
“This game has always been an experiment,” the studio said. “We believe its progression has historical value, and we’re committed to preserving that history while ensuring our games remain playable offline and available for the long term.”
Additional changes include updates to the game’s manual and credits, consolidation of documentation into a single Readme file, refreshed Discord links, screenshot guidance, removal of the End User License Agreement (EULA), restoration of functionality to select hidden files, and direct access to the Readme through the game’s launcher.
Players experiencing issues after updating are encouraged to perform a clean uninstall and reinstall of the game.
Protoria Studios noted that the future of Optimum Link remains uncertain. Due to issues with archived source files dating back to 2019, resuming active development presents technical challenges. Although there are no current plans for new content, the studio expressed interest in potentially revisiting the project in the future.
In the meantime, Optimum Link will continue to receive maintenance updates that support preservation, compatibility, and long-term accessibility in line with Protoria Studios’ philosophy that its games should remain fully playable offline, forever.
